Find Files

If you click on an item on the main screen and no image or media file appears, and the window above the viewing area reads - "Unable to locate …", then Sanction II is unable to locate the file based on the path information in the database.

The most common cause for this message is a missing CDROM in the CD drive, or a disconnected network connection. Restoring the connection or inserting the proper CD will solve the lost file problem, provided the path information in the database is correct. This is because Sanction II ignores drive letters and simply searches connected drives sequentially for the first matching file.

However there may be instances where the file path itself is incorrect. This can occur if a user moves files manually without updating the database, or from importing a load file which contains incorrect path information.

If you wish Sanction II to search connected drives for a missing file, click on the group in the tree view containing the missing file and select Find Files from the Special Functions menu. This will launch the Find Files dialog.

To search for a file or multiple files:

1.    Select them from the Missing Files list

2.    Select the drives you wish to search from the Connected Drives list

3.    Click on the Find button.

Keep in mind that Sanction II will search every selected drive and all subdirectories, so the search may take several minutes.

If a file is located, all found files matching the selected file name are displayed in the Found Files list. If you wish to update the database with one of the found files, click on the check box next to the file and click on the Update button. You may select multiple files for updating.

If you wish to compare files, double click on the found file in the list to launch the appropriate viewing application.

Important – The Find Files feature should not be used to correct large numbers of missing files. Use the Case Editor utility instead. The Case Editor is designed specifically to search and replace various portions of the case database, and if a large number of files appear to be missing, the most probable cause is a globally incorrect file path.

The best use for the Find File feature is to determine the correct file path to missing items so that they may be corrected all at once in the database from the Case Editor search and replace function

Review the Case Editor help file for information on globally replacing file paths in the database.

Note - The Find Files feature cannot search UNC paths, only local and mapped network drives.
