Converting MPEG Clips into Windows Media Files (.wmv)

There may be instances when you need to forward video clip information to third parties who do not own a copy of Sanction II.

MPEG clips in a case can be converted into highly compressed Windows Media Files (wmv) based on the clip segment ranges. These files are typically small enough to e-mail and can be viewed directly in Windows Media PlayerÔ.

Important – Windows Media Files should NEVER be used in place of synchronized MPEG files. Windows Media format is a "streaming" format, and any synchronization applied to this type of file is highly inaccurate and subject to the buffering of the file. Clips should not be converted just as a space saving measure – always use the original MPEG files for any synchronized playback requirements in Sanction.

To Convert Media Clips to .wmv files:

1.    Select Convert Media Clips from the Main Screen Special Functions menu.

2.    Select the Type of Conversion Profile to use. In most cases selecting a Video conversion factor of 768Kbps and Audio conversion factor of 96Kbps should be sufficient, however you may select any of the profiles listed.

3.    Select the source group for the clips from the Sources window. Selecting a source fills the Clip Details window with all clips created from that source file.

4.    From the Clip Details window, select the clips you wish to convert, right click and select Add To Conversion Lis from the pop up menu.

5.    Select the Destination directory for the clips. The default directory is the "CurrentCase"\Exports.

6.    Click on the image\ebx_-40372884.gif button to begin the conversion.

Important – if your case database is located on a network, you should choose a destination path for the files on the local hard drive. Otherwise, you may experience errors when trying to create clips on a network drive during heavy network traffic.

Multi-Clips

Multi-clips can also be converted along with regular clip segments, however multi-segments will create an additional file "multi-clip ID.wvx." This file is a standard Windows Media play list file that contains the names and sequence of the of the individual wmv file segments. To play a multi-segment play list, load the wvx file instead of the individual wmv files in Windows Media Player.

Windows Media Encoder

To successfully create .wmv files, you must install the Windows Media Encoder runtime files. These files are not installed during the Sanction II installation, however the runtime installation executable file is located in the Sanction II subdirectory.

To install the Windows Media Encoder Runtime:

1.    Launch the Windows Explorer

2.    Browse to the Sanction II program directory (typically "C:\Program Files\SanctionII")

3.    Double click on the WMEDist.exe file
